This is Tilikum.
His story is long and sad, so only the most important things will be in this post.
Tilikum was captured in Berufjörður off the east coast of Iceland on November 9th 1983 at about three years of age.
Tilikum was sent to live at Sealand of the Pacific in British Columbia, Canada. There he lived with two older female orcas named Nootka and Haida. Tilikum was constantly attacked and raked by the females. The trainers used food deprivation as a method to get the orcas to perform. At night the whales would be locked in a tiny module (basically a floating tin box) and the lights would be shut off.
In 1991 Tilikum, Nootka and Haida killed their trainer Keltie Byrne by dragging her to the bottom of their pool where she drowned. She also received many puncture wounds and lacerations from the orcas.
Due to Keltie’s death Sealand of the Pacific closed down and all three orcas were sold to Seaworld where Tilikum still lives to this day (Haida and Nootka both died long ago)
At Seaworld Tilikum usually ends the Shamu shows by splashing the audience with water. But his most important job there seems to be impregnating the females. Seaworld has even taught Tilikum to let the trainers masturbate him in order to get his semen which they impregnate the females at the other parks with. Right now 54% of Seaworld’s orca population share Tilikum’s genes.
When Tilikum isn’t splashing a screaming audience or impregnating the females, he’s mostly in a tank all by himself. He does sometimes get to spend time with his grandson Trua which both of them seem to enjoy. But most of his time Tilikum spends by himself, sometimes looking through the gates at the females who are getting rub downs by the trainers, something Tilikum himself hasn’t gotten since 2010.
In 1999 Tilikum was involved in a second human death. A man named Daniel Dukes jumped into Tilikum’s tank after closing hours. Next morning an employee found Tilikum with the dead man draped over his back. Daniel Dukes had sustained puncture wounds over most of his body and lacerations caused by Tilikum.
In 2010 Tilikum killed his trainer Dawn Brancheau (which is why he no longer gets physical contact from his trainers) She was laying down in the shallow water next to the pool and Tilikum grabbed her by her arm and pulled her in the water. This time Tilikum did more damage than he ever had before. He scalped Dawn, he severed her spinal cord and he broke her jaw and ribs.
There are many theories as to why Tilikum has acted the way he has, but no matter the reason for his actions it’s a pretty safe bet to say that both he and the employees at Seaworld would be better of if Tilikum would no longer live at Seaworld as the situation, several times, has been proven to be too dangerous for everyone involved.
This is a petion for Tilikum to be released to a sea pen (Keiko’s old sea pen is empty, so that’s a possibility) There he will be able to swim in the sea, feel the currents of the ocean, breathe in the fresh air, be away from the noisy audiences and not have to perform, he will get to simply be an orca again.
